Greetings Slackers,

Apparently the new catalyst drivers (9.4) which are out soon will drop all support for any chip older than the R500. So, if you have anything below an ATI 2400 running, you are SOL.

Now here is the big catch. The new Xorg server that is also coming out, requires that if you use ATI drivers that you have to use a minimum of Catalyst 9.4, or that you use the xf86-video-ati drivers. While this my not be a problem for some it will be for others who require the ATI drivers for games and other activities because the Open Source drivers do not work.

Just giving everyone a heads up
I was caught off guard since I have an Xpress 200M In my laptop.

Actually my Xpress 200M has been working for me for the past year using the Mesa/DRI drivers. I never have gotten the official fglrx drivers to work really. So good riddance fglrx.

hmmm, I have had the exact opposite. I had screen corruption issues with the Mesa/DRI drivers (screen would go white every time i logged out or the display was reset) and when i got fglrx it fixed them.

Ya I know it's flaky. The version I have set up is a little older too and it was tricky getting it going, as I built it myself. Google Earth worked on it, and so did ET I think. It's about 50% speed of fglrx like usual.

If slackware moves to the new X server and Mesa, it should work out of the box and run a bit better than what I have. For some people at least. I've read some people have problems with their versions of chip. Too bad support is going to be a moving target in these times.
