Can't use startx or gnome-session in slack 9.1: Can't open display.

Whenever i use startx to load GNOME it says
gnome-smproxy: unable to open display :0.0

Then we i try to use gnome-session i get this:
Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display:

Then when i'm in root and i try to run gdm it'll go to the loging screen and lets me login and choose my window manager, but when it starts to load it goes abck to the login screen.

Can you guys help me?

Apparently, you don't have X configured correctly yet.

Xconfigurator

If you need the nVidia driver, you want the Linux IA32 driver unless you just bought the new AMD 64 bit CPU

How can i find out my monitor/video card specs? i dont have windows and i have no idea what this computer started out with cause its 5 years old.

You should be able to find out your hardware specs with a little internet searching. Other than that, I thought the software is usually able to probe your hardware...

OK i did all the configuring and such so now when i use startx it says:
gnome-smproxy: unable to connect to session manager.

When i use gnome-session it still says:
Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display.

slack 9.1 doesnot have gnome installed (not on mine) so if you want gnome first type:

whereis gnome

and if all you have is "/usr/share/gnome" then you will have to install it, otherwise you can use WMaker or blackbox
