proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
I'm relatively new to Linux and am probably doing something wrong.
But haven't got a clue what...

Thanks in advance for any sugestions.

I'd modify the /etc/fstab line for sda1 to be:
Code:
/dev/sda1 /mnt/mp3 vfat noauto,user,rw,umask=0000 0 0
You should be able to mount it with mount /mnt/mp3

If that's not what you were trying to do, let me know...

Thanks for the fast reply!
Changed the line in /etc/fstab, but unfortunately mounting doesn't seem to go well:
Code:
bash-3.1$ su
Password:
bash-3.1# mount /mnt/mp3
mount: mount point /mnt/mp3 does not exist

That just means the directory /mnt/mp3 hasn't been created yet. As root, try running mkdir /mnt/mp3 - that should fix it.

Wish it did...

It looks like the device file got deleted. I've had some flakey behaviour with USB devices here as well. Sometimes device numbers change between re-boots or mounts. Running ls -l /dev/sda* > ~/sda.log will dump the list of sda* devices that are currently in the /dev directory to a file in your home directory called sda.log. The file will be handy if anything goes wrong with the following.

Running mknod or MAKEDEV usually gets things working again. For example, to re-create /dev/sda1, run either of the following as root:
Code:
mknod --mode=0640 /dev/sda1 b 8 1
cd /dev &&./MAKEDEV sda
The first one creates /dev/sda1 and the second one re-creates the sda[0-15] devices.

Tried it and tried fsck and fdisk -l /dev/sda (found that on Google) too:

Code:
bash-3.1# mknod --mode=0640 /dev/sda1 b 8 1
bash-3.1# cd /dev &&./MAKEDEV sda
bash-3.1# mount /mnt/mp3
mount: /dev/sda1 is not a valid block device
bash-3.1#
bash-3.1# fsck /dev/sda1
fsck 1.38 (30-Jun-2005)
fsck: fsck.vfat: not found
fsck: Error 2 while executing fsck.vfat for /dev/sda1
bash-3.1# fdisk -l /dev/sda
bash-3.1# mount /mnt/mp3
mount: /dev/sda1 is not a valid block device
bash-3.1#

Just out of curiousity, is the output of dmesg still showing the device as /dev/sda1 when you plug it in?

You mean like this?
Code:
bash-3.1# fsck /dev/sda
fsck 1.38 (30-Jun-2005)
e2fsck 1.38 (30-Jun-2005)
/sbin/e2fsck: Read-only file system while trying to open /dev/sda
Disk write-protected; use the -n option to do a read-only
check of the device.
bash-3.1# fsck /dev/sda -n
fsck 1.38 (30-Jun-2005)
e2fsck 1.38 (30-Jun-2005)
Couldn't find ext2 superblock, trying backup blocks...
/sbin/e2fsck: Bad magic number in super-block while trying to open /dev/sda

The superblock could not be read or does not describe a correct ext2
filesystem. If the device is valid and it really contains an ext2
filesystem (and not swap or ufs or something else), then the superblock
is corrupt, and you might try running e2fsck with an alternate superblock:
    e2fsck -b 8193 <device>

bash-3.1#
UPDATE:
Hey, now it's mounted!
Code:
bash-3.1# mount /mnt/mp3
mount: /dev/sda1 already mounted or /mnt/mp3 busy
mount: according to mtab, /dev/sda1 is already mounted on /mnt/mp3
bash-3.1#
Now trying to get it to work...

Tried this:
Drag 'n drop an mp3 onto the device in System, but get the error (translated):
Couldn't write to /mnt/mp3/David Bowie - Heroes.mp3.
Even as root it won't.
Any suggstions?

After a reboot it works, mp3's can be copied to the device!
Thanks everybody for the advice.
