Boot in Grub, now what?

I've installed Slackware 10.0 with no GUI, looking to get a command line only. Install seems to gone thru okay. Now, when I boot up, I get grub and it stops there. What should I do to get the login prompt? Or did I not install it properly?

slack uses lilo.....so grub was in your mbr from one of your last distros.

re-insert your slack cd and tell it your root=/dev/hdX and boot back into slack then re-run lilo.

if you like grub (gosh I do) its easy to download and install.

For grub to work, you need a menu.lst and grub.conf, however each can be identical to the other. What I have is one sym-linked to the other. The two files are put in your /boot/grub folder. Here's mine:
Code:
default 0
timeout 30
#
title=Slackware-2.6.9-20041123
root (hd0,10)
kernel (hd0,10)/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.9-20041123 root=/dev/hda11 vga=791
#
title=Slackware-2.6.9-20041106
root (hd0,10)
kernel (hd0,10)/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.9-20041106 root=/dev/hda11 vga=791
The above allows me to choose between two different kernels. The 'default' line tells grub which choice is the default if none is selected at bootup (0 is the first kernel in the list, 1 is the second, etc.). The 'timeout' line tells grub how long to wait until automatically using the default choice. The 'title' line tells grub what to display for that particular kernel when presenting the bootup menu. The 'root' line tells grub which partition has my root directory. The 'kernel' line is self-explanatory.

Note that, for grub,

Code:
/dev/hda1 is written hd0,0
/dev/hda2 is written hd0,1
/dev/hdb1 is written hd1,0
etc.
That is, everything starts with 0 instead of a or 1. So, in my example, my root partition (/dev/hda11) is written as hd0,10 for grub to work.

Well, when I think about it, I had FC2, then Suse (which didn't completely install) and then Slackware. Everytime, I was recreating the partitions and formatting them...

before just happily rerunning lilo, you might want to change your /etc/lilo.conf to have it install to mbr. I would assume since it isn't there now, you installed it to your root partition.

That's just a caution if you're dual-booting. If there are problems, the other OS might not boot. You know that anyways.
