Well, from the main login page, simply type "root" for username and the password when it asks for the password. If you have already logged in as a non-root user, you can simply bring up a terminal (like Konsole) and type in "su" (which stands for substitute user) and when it asks for the password, type in the root password.

Can you do a ls -l of those files?
Which access do you need?
Read, or write?

Please do not post the same thread in more than one forum. Picking the most relevant forum and posting it once there makes it easier for other members to help you and keeps the discussion all in one place.

I have merged two your threads from Newbie. In the future please don't post multiple times about the same problem -- it's hard to follow them to see what's going on.

Your problem may be that the main partition is mounted in read-only mode. Run 'mount' command. What do you get?

In fact, it wasn't. I had to browse through 3 thread to find out you're not booting in the normal way and read-only mount may be the case. Have you checked 'mount'?
