Blk screen on boot up; viewable again on desktop

So I recompiled my kernel to 2.6.19.2. Everything's working fine, except for my video card and this issue here. But I tink I cant remove my video modules, until i get into init 3. But anyway, after I recompiled my kernel, rebooted, everything seems to be fine. My lilo thing shows up, but then after i hit enter.. the screen goes to taht dark grayish color. It's on -- the monitor is on with the green light n all, but I cant see anything. I waited for a lil while to see if it'd come to, but it enever did. I heard my computer making noises, so I thought I'd give it a shot and attempt to log in. Which it did successfully. I logged in and typed startx. Then my monitor flicked off and then back on and the KDE loading displayed showed with my mouse cursor. And everythign works from there on. Anyone know the reasoning for this? I assume I left something out in my recompile. Anyone got any pointers to whic section of the compile or?? Thanks!!

Sounds like you need to compile your console framebuffer in. Then also compile in some fonts.

I.E, Y to "Support for frame buffer devices" in graphics support under drivers.

Then I use Y to VESA VGA graphics support

Then Y to some compiled in fonts. I have a kernel patched for bootsplash and my config seems a bit different here so I'll leave it to someone that can see what you see on their screen, or if you can figure it out wonderful.
