bad install?

still new to the linux game here. I finally got my bot to resolve DNS names, dunno how i did it, all i did was reboot. Now i have another problem. I login as root, it defaults me to my "Desktop" directory. No problem, i grew up in the MSDos days, so i just "cd .." and it takes me to my topmost directory. herein lies my problem. I cd change to ANY directory, but the ect directory. when i try to "cd ect" (tried all sorts of other viriables as well) i get an error that says: -bash: cd: ect: No such file or directory

Of course, this popses a problem, because all the files i need to edit for ftp, mysql, ect, ect are all in that directory.

Do i have a bad install here?

Thanks for the help
Blade

No, not
cd /ect
please do
cd /etc

The directory where the system stores configuration files is called /etc, not /ect.

What's the permissions on and who owns the /etc folder?

# / pwd

# / (/ is current working directory)

# / ls -la etc
