Activating my networks card

Hello!

I haven't used linux for 3-4 years now and since we're supposed to do our socket-programming in linux in school now I thought I'd try slack again.
Problem is I've never had to install my network card before it always works straight away. Spoiled I guess, so this time could you guys help me out?
I'm using a laptop Amilo si 1520, running
lspci -v | grep -i ethernet
gives me:
Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation PRO/100 VE Network Connection (rev 02)

Any ideas as to how I could start using the internet

what does
Code:
ifconfig -a
give you ?
if it shows an interface (not 127.0.0.1 local) then to get an IP address try
Code:
pump
or
Code:
dhclient
to try an get a DHCP response.
Otherwise tell us more about your network layout.
You may have to run the above as root or by prefixing sudo

All I get is the loopback 127.0.0.1 when doing ifconfig -a

edit: telling you more about the network layout, I don't know exactly how to do that I have an integrated networks card in my laptop, I'm getting my inter through a ethernet cable that is connected to a switch that's in turn connected to a router.

The Intel 100 Pro should be supported by kernel module e100. Does dmesg give any info that the driver is loaded?

'dmesg | grep e100' or 'dmesg | grep Intel' should help.

Doesn't seem like it is :/

dmesg | grep -i intel

intel machine cehck architecture supported
intel machine check reporting enabled on cPU#0
CPU0: intel(R) core(TM)2 cPU T5600 @ 1.83Ghz stepping 06
intel_rng: FWH not detected
agpgart: detetec an intel 945GM chipset.
iTCO_wdt: intel TCO watchdog timer driver v1.01
intel ISA PCIC probe: not found

and that's not the actual output I just typed it as I read it on my laptop(the human factor might have slipped in some stuff).

What modules do you have loaded?

Try
Code:
lsmod
If the e100 is not listed, try
Code:
modprobe e100
