[Solved] 12.2 and /dev/dri empty: no direct rendering

Hi, I've installed (not upgraded) Slackware 12.2 . After the installation, I was trying to enable direct rendering. I've never had similar problems with earlier version of Slackware, I've been using this distribution since 2004...

The problem is that /dev/dri remains empty, no device is created, so drm initialization fails.

I have an Asus A2500d notebook, with an ATI Radeon 9600. Proprietary drivers 9.1 don't work, there is a known issue with the 2.6.27 kernel (I'll try to recompile it later with MSI and MSI-X enabled, as suggested by many people, but this is not the real problem). I've tryed both Catalyst 8.12 and open source driver. The latter (radeon) works fine on a opensuse-based kde 4 live, but not on slack 12.2. Nor downgrading to Catalyst 8.12 works.
The problem, as I said before, is the empty /dev/dri folder. I wonder why the device is not created. I thougth it could be an udev related problem, but looking at udev rules in /lib/udev/rules.d all seems ok. There are a number of bug report in various distribution for this problem, like this:

http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=255841

but slackware 12.2 has the correct rule KERNEL=="card*", GROUP="video"

My user and also root belong to video group.

This is the part of Xorg.0.log related to radeon loading:

Fatal server error:
Caught signal 11. Server aborting

Catalyst 8.12 have similar problems. I don't thin this is an udev problem, rules seem right and also udev manual says this:

Quote:
Writing rules is not a workaround for the problem where no device nodes for your particular device exist. Even if there are no matching rules, udev will create the device node with the default name supplied by the kernel
Log of kde 4 live by opensuse says instead:

Code:
drmOpenDevice: node name is /dev/dri/card0
drmOpenDevice: open result is 10, (OK)
drmOpenDevice: node name is /dev/dri/card0
drmOpenDevice: open result is 10, (OK)
drmOpenByBusid: Searching for BusID pci:0000:01:00.0
drmOpenDevice: node name is /dev/dri/card0
drmOpenDevice: open result is 10, (OK)
drmOpenByBusid: drmOpenMinor returns 10
drmOpenByBusid: drmGetBusid reports pci:0000:01:00.0

This is right, device is created.

Any idea? :-(

Thanks
Stefano

Hello,

Do you have the following lines in your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file:

Code:
# This loads the GLX module
    Load "glx"
# This loads the DRI module
    Load "dri"
and at the end:

Code:
 Section "DRI"
    Mode 0666
 EndSection
As a way to help us support you, could you please post your /etc/X11/xorg.conf and complete /var/log/Xorg.0.log files.

I hace (partially) solved this problem. I had to manually load the module "radeon" before starting X. But shouldn't it been automatically loaded? Doing

modprobe radeon
startx

works fine. Device /dev/dri/card0 is now created. But direct rendering is still off.

@ gegechris99: I have all you wrote in my xorg.conf, anyway specifying to load dri and glx is useless, since they are enabled by default.
This is my xorg.conf:

Code:

# which dynamically loadable modules to load.
# **********************************************************************

# This loads the DBE extension module.

# initialisation of the XFree86-DGA extension within that module.

    Load "freetype"

With opensuse, direct rendering works with open source radeon driver. Instead, on Slackware 12.2 I see a sad "Direct Rendering:no".

What could it be?

Which version of openSUSE?

A "man radeon" and search for EXA shows you might want to add the following option to xorg.conf:
Code:
Option "AccelMethod" "EXA"

I tryed kde 4 live, based on opensuse 11.1. EXA option doesn't make direct rendering working...

I figured out the problem: doing a glxinfo with LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose says:

Code:
libGL: XF86DRIGetClientDriverName: 5.3.0 r300 (screen 0)
libGL: OpenDriver: trying /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/dri/tls/r300_dri.so
libGL: OpenDriver: trying /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/dri/r300_dri.so
libGL error: dlopen /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/dri/r300_dri.so failed (/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/dri/r300_dri.so: undefined symbol: _glapi_Dispatch)
libGL error: unable to load driver: r300_dri.so
how to solve this?

Do a "ldd -r" on the lot of module files in dri or drivers... they all have undefined symbols. They are modules and get loaded into X.Org and then they will find their missing symbols.

Don't know. What does "strings /usr/lib/libGL.so | grep _glapi_Dispatch" say?

Nothing... but a with general "strings /usr/lib/libGL.so | grep _glapi" says:

Code:
bash-3.1$ strings /usr/lib/libGL.so | grep _glapi
_glapi_get_proc_address
_glapi_set_dispatch
_glapi_check_multithread
_glapi_get_dispatch_table_size
_glapi_check_table
_glapi_get_proc_name
_glapi_get_proc_offset
_glapi_add_dispatch
_glapi_get_dispatch
_glapi_get_context
_glapi_set_context
_glapi_noop_enable_warnings
_glapi_set_warning_func

_glapi_set_warning_func
Then the function "glapi_Dispatch(...)" is not available. So there should be an "unresolved symbol".

The libGL from Slackware 12.2 does have this function. Did you install any third-party display driver and corrupted the GL library?

The libGL from Slackware 12.2 does have this function. Did you install any third-party display driver and corrupted the GL library?
I installed ati catalyst 9.1 drivers, but I removed them because they don't work with 2.6.27 kernel. I tryed also 8.12 (not working) and 8.11 (these don't compile at all) but I remodev them. I did all by building packages with the option --buildpkg Slackware/All, but I removed all with removepkg. I removed /etc/ati too.
Therefore maybe proprietary drivers left some corrupted files on my system...

Should I reinstall Slackware official drivers packages? One of these should be mesa-7.0.3-i486-1.tgz. Do I need to reinstall other packages?

Look at this:

Code:
bash-3.1$ ls -l /usr/lib/ |grep libGL.so
lrwxrwxrwx   1 root root       12 2009-02-05 18:10 libGL.so -> libGL.so.1.2
lrwxrwxrwx   1 root root       12 2009-02-05 18:10 libGL.so.1 -> libGL.so.1.2
-rwxr--r-- 1 root root 556288 2009-02-05 18:08 libGL.so.1.2
libGL.so.1.2 and symlinks have a date more recent than other files in that directory, so I think ati drivers overwrited mesa library and left the file there...

Thanks for your help, can I ask you to post the output of "strings /usr/lib/libGL.so | grep _glapi_Dispatch" on your system? Do you have Slackware 12.2?

I've just reinstalled mesa packages and now direct rendering is active!
I've tryed some applications like stellarium, and they works fine. Google earth is very slow, maybe it need ati proprietary drivers... I hope the next release of these drivers will function with new kernels.

Thanks
Stefano
