Hi folks, I have slackware installed, and after loading the
module for ac97 sound card, I could have ok sound from
my speakers!however, when I play a cd with the cdrom player,
the sound volume is really very low! it has nothing to do
with the mixer, as all other sounds coming from the desktop
are loud and clear! I have heard about preamplifier problems,
but in windows it works alright (unless windows makes sure to
preamplify the sound)

You can get it from the salckware EXTRAS CD (CD 4) or from the extras dir on FTP site. It's a great little program. If you have alsa you might wwant to try amixer, or Gnome/Kde programs kmix and i think gmix.

I do not have the fourth cd...in fact I just have one
I tried alsa, but with no result! once I create the modules,
I load them, but the sound server does not fo up, as
instead did with the module I loaded before!
I should once again stress that the volume is quite high and ok
as far as any action in the desktop is concerned...it is
the audio of the cdrom which is very low...by the way, is there a
way to have only the audio from the cdrom in the speakers?
could it not just be that, a kind of "competition" of different sources?(although in a well configured environment that should not be a problem)
let me know what you think..I like slackware, specially KDE
desktop, and would rather stick to it, then having to go back
to Mandrake (where all is set automatically)
A mixer program has a level setting for just the CD Audio level. I think that is what the other posts were referring too. Also, you didn't post what player you were using. If kscd, then try looking in the center directly below the display. There is an additional slider control that is defaulted to about 40% or so if I recall. Slide it to the far right. Other players I cannot speak much in regard to them, but check to see if the one you are using might have a similar volume feature.
I have tried in mandrake 8.1, and set aumix properly, but with no
luck still! all the settings were to the far right, and as you said I
could hear a slight increase in the volume of the speakers,
but still very little! I set to the right all the bars, so I am sure
it has not to do with the mixer! It is as if the sound wasn't amplified at all! has it to do with the damn on board ac97 sound card?
One more point....in mandrake 8.1 the sound card is not
recongnised, although doing lsmod I can see the relecant ac97
modules loaded on, as in slackware!
