Do you have a SATA drive? I think smartd doesn't work yet on SATA drives. It fails on mine too...

Unfortunately I have the exact same problem, one ATA, one SATA. I just disabled smartd till this thing is fixed up in some recent update. With Fedora's rate, I don't think that's going to be long.

I 've had the same here on a machine with Fedora 3. Machine has 2 IDE discs and 3 SCSI discs. The workaround is very easy:
- locate smartd.conf (normally in /etc)
- edit the file and just comment the drive that will cause the error (the scsi or sata drives)
- reboot or just start smartd by hand ( service smartd start )

Untill they get the smartd up and running for sata drives you can change your /etc/smartd.conf file and remove the sata drive from the list. Once they get it working with sata just put the line back in.

Same 'O'

Have the same problem,

here is what smartd: conf says....

/dev/hda -H -m root@localhost.localdomain
/dev/hdd -H -m root@localhost.localdomain

So my hda drive is the one with Fedora 3 on it , (40GB)
and hdb is a 850 MB HDD that has WinXP on it.

which command do I use to disable that part of the conf file, ,or can I just put a ' to disable that part.

I am assuming that hdb is the one causing the fail status.

I have plugged an ATA HDD Turned on and in that time didn't noticed that the service was failing, the computer then turn very slow in response and the Load Increased substancialy, then I removed the HDD rebooted, end the service is still failing, and the computer is still slow.

Any ideas?
