How to change resolution?

Could someone advice me please how to change resolution in console of Red Hat Linux 7.2 to 1024x768?

As this is asked all the time and a search would have brought up many results, if your running slack, run xf86config or edit your /etc/X11/XF86Config file by hand to change the default resolutions.. should be under the Screens Section of the file if you edit by hand.

at least it is in redhat 7.3

You can also execute the setup command from the command line. Here you can adjust your monitor settings.

setup doesn't exist in Slackware. and usually in Slack, its just XF86Config just to clarify things a bit. He has Slack as his distro, but he didn't specify if he was using a different distro.

Excuse the interruption, but i have a question, if anyone can help.
I have RH7.3 and i do not know how to change resolution, but i mean CORRECTLY, because if i set for example in XF86Config-4 (the file is using RH7.3) two resolution 1024 and 1280, if i switch in 1280 i obtain NOT the screen in 1280, but only the desktop area, so i must scroll to see it entirely.

Can anyone helps me?

In RH7.2 i know that the resolution change is simple as in 7.3: you must add a resolution in the sreen section, then select it with the sequence of keys CTRL-ALT and the plus of the numeric keypad... but now i do not remember if it's CTRL-ALT or only ALT, try both ;-)

gokussj at the 1st place do your monitor support 1028 anot? I believe your monitor doesnt support , try 1024x768 it should display correctly.

Thanks Sifvion, but i have a 19 inches monitor and i can set up to 1600x1200x75 Hz, so i do not think the problem is the monitor.

I make an example that can be useful: if in XF86Config-4 i set as FIRST resolution 800x600 and then 1024, when i switch ALSO in 1024 i obtain an enlargement only of the desktop area and this problem attacks me :-( also when in the past i had an nVidia Geforce 2 MX, now i have a Radeon 8500.

What now? :-((((((

So the problem is: if i set more than one resolution my XServer use correctly only the first; the others are only enlargement of the desktop area. The driver of the monitor is correct, Linux find it during install process.

Then it kind of sounds like it may be a "refresh rate" problem. Make sure the refresh rates are correct for your monitor, and if you are not sure, try a few out until it works just as you would like.

gokussj Master is right maybe you can provide the model and brand for your monitor so I can help you to find the spec if you dont have it?
