udev is slowing my FC2 system down

I've had Fedora Core 2 installed for a long time now. Recently, It has become painfully slow. (mouse jumps as it tracks the screen, it takes five minutes to boot and five minutes to login)

I checked the system monitor it shows that my CPU is running at 100%.

After killing off each process one by one, when I killed something called udev, the CPU usage droppped and the computer was running quickly again.

However, when I restart the computer, the computer runs slowly again and I have to kill udev from the system monitor to get any proper usage.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

Thanks so much!

http://www.kroah.com/linux/talks/ols...an-OLS2003.pdf <---help explains Udev

to stop Udev from starting at reboot, login as normal, and kill the Udev process, then, open the services program, it should be under, "System Settings>>Server Settings>>Services" but I could be wrong, search around for the Services program in the start menu...when you find it, in the list on the left side of the window, find Udev, it my not show up exactly like "Udev" it may have a version number or somthing in the name aswell, when you find Udev in the list, tell the Services manager not to start Udev at boot, you should be able to uncheck the box next to the Udev service, then reboot, and hopfully you should get a faster system.

thanks for the info.

I wasn't able to find it in the services section, but I was able to remove the rpm package then reinstall it. unfortunately, it didn't work.

Would it be safe to remove the udev rpm package, or will it crash the OS?

Thanks!

it should be safe to just uninstall the rpm package.
