tweaking firefox

I want to apply some of the tweaks that you can do with firefox found here but I can't find the user.js file it refers to. Does anyone know where to find this or do I have to add it. I'm running version 0.8.

It should be in your profile folder:
~/.phoenix/default/xxxxxxxx.slt/user.js

Ahh thats why i couldn't find it. Why would they name the profile folder pheonix? why not something logical like firefox.

Oh i'm dumb, all i had to do was click on user.js in that page and it has a whole bunch of info...

Firefox has had many names and the preferences directory has remained.

it says its non-existant by default, and that you should create the file in:
~/.phoenix/default/xxxxxxx.slt (xxxxxxx is whatever is there)

yep, I did that. Now my browser is much faster, almost comparable to opera. Very nice!

I know this topic has been solved but there is an easier way than the user.js file. It is actually an extension that allows you to modify the user.js file and lists the appropriate possibilities for it. Check it out at

It is called preferential and my experience with it has been great. It adds an "Advanced Preferences" menu item under the tools menu item.
