Question tweaking Suse 9

I just bought the Suse 9.0 for AMD 64. Ive been using RH9 on a p4 2.4 Ghz. I have not been able to download teh nvidia drivers for my card yet, but my initial impression of SUse is not so great. it feels slow. What are common ways to tweak this thing? Right now i feel like i just blew a lot of money.

Also, how do i get the DVD stuff to work? I know its that whole encryption thing going on. Thanks.

First off The AMD 64 is designed for AMD 64 bit chips. Pentium 4 2.4 ghz is a 32 bit chip, not a AMD 64, so you have the wrong kernel. You are going to have to re-compile your kernel.

check out www.tldp.org for help on compiling your kernel.

As far as getting DVD to work, download the latest MPlayer Source, and recompile that. You should be able to get MPlayer working with DVD support. You are going to have to download the DVD LIB files also.

No, i have the right kernel, this is a amd64 chip. I was comparing it to another machine which is a p4.

Arent there already pre-compiled rpm binaries for Suse like mplayer and stuff? This Suse pro came with a lot of programs.

Ok I see what your saying. NVIDIA hasn't made drivers for the new SuSE 9.0 kernel yet, so what you have to do is install the source for your kernel.

Open up YAST. Open up the online update. When it access the server and displays a list of packages, scroll all the way down. You should see NVIDIA driver. Check that box, and click next. It will download and update your XF86Config file for you. When its done, just log out and restart X.

But to answer your question about the RPM, NO. There is no rpm for the AMD64 chips. You'll have to go to http://www.nvidia.com/object//linux_...amd64_1.0-4499 download the kernel and GLX .tar.gz files, recompile and manually install them. Its just as easy to do as rpm files.

1. Download file
2. type tar -xzf <filename>.tar.gz
3. cd <into directory>
4. ./configure
5. make
6. change to root
7. make install

and repeat for the next file. Then as root edit the /etc/X11/XF86Config file
remove Load "dri" and Load "glcore", and add Load "glx"
replace driver "nv" or driver "vesa" with driver "nvidia"

restart X

Oh, and if you want to tweak your machine, you'll have to recompile your kernel, add and remove what you don't want. Same as all linux distros. But I just had a thought. You said you are using the AMD64 kernel, so you have the new AMD HAMMER chip right? Ok, If you don't have the Hammer chip, use the file NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4496-pkg2.run and follow these steps

reboot at runlevel 3 in the console
login as root
go to the dir where NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4496-pkg2.run is located
type export IGNORE_CC_MISMATCH=yes
type sh ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4496.pkg2.run --add-this-kernel

A new kernel will be created
when thats done, run the new kernel driver file (should have the word custom in it)
then follow the steps above on editing your XF86Config file
