Having trouble with 2wire homeportal

I have been trying to get information on setting configuring linux so that it recognizes the USB as a networking devise. I called SBC and 2Wire but they say, "We are not allowed to help with problems regarding linux".

so anyways what I think I need to do is configure kernel so that it recognizes usb devices.

Then I need for linux to rrecognize it at a networking device.

then i need to get the drivers or instructions on how to make it all work...

If there are any tutorials i could read that would be great. I am a
new to linux so I understand if you do not take the time to explain

Any advice is appriciated.

I have had an absolute nightmare of a time trying to get the 2Wire USB working with Windoze 2000. I have a top-of-the-line Epox motherboard from December 2000 (Socket A), but 2Wire is convinced that my motherboard can't handle the power allocation request by the HomePortal for the USB port. They claim it requests 480ma. The USB 1.1 standard limits non-powered USB devices to 500ma.

Perhaps your linux system has the same issue?

Actualy, no. Linux thinks the PC Adapter is a scanner which is why it throws it out. I have Win2k (the best version ever, where they actualy got it right) and have never had a glitch. If we could find what chipset was used for the device, we would be more likely to come up with an answer as to getting it to work with linux.

REMEMBER: Brand is not important, chipset is.

Interesting, I have W2K with all SP's and updates, but the 1000SW HomePortal's USB is flakely .. rarely works. I have no problems with my USB 2.0 scanner and USB 1 printer.

never had a problem with either, except when we tried to use the PC Port Phoneline adaptor with Mac OS 10 Panther, and found we needed Jaguar. And apple don't do it as a free upgrade. Bastards.

If we did get it to work though, I'd connect to the 1200 via Ethernet (I already tried it and it works a dream, faster than on my Win2k setup) and run the mac off the Adaptor

No. Just plain HomePortal 1000SW and a couple of different systems running plain Windoze 2000 + all the service packs. Real simple config. Bizarre thing was it worked once or twice and then quite (after rebooting the Windoze system). Very flakely.
