Sound icon missing

Hi

I am running Jessie with Gnome, and on the bar along the top, right hand side where the wireless, battery and user icons are I'm sure there used to be a sound icon too.

I'm not entirely sure when but now it's missing.

Any idea how to get it back?

first of all, check your panel's options, maybe you can simply add it back.

do you have sound on your system, is it working normally?

Sound does work, however (and I only noticed this yesterday as I dont use sound very often)

The hardware buttons no longer work for mute/vol up/down
The icon is missing
I can control the volume by launching alsamixer and changing it manually
In the control panel the sound option is there but everything is greyed out

maybe pulseaudio dies for some reason and you're back to plain alsa...
i don't know how or why.
update your system.
make a full reboot.
if it still doesn't work, post the output of
Code:
ps aux | grep pulse

Have you tried right-clicking the tiny empty space between clock & wireless? It should show panel options there.
