I am running Jessie with Gnome, and on the bar along the top, right hand side where the wireless, battery and user icons are I'm sure there used to be a sound icon too.
Sound does work, however (and I only noticed this yesterday as I dont use sound very often)
The hardware buttons no longer work for mute/vol up/down
The icon is missing
I can control the volume by launching alsamixer and changing it manually
In the control panel the sound option is there but everything is greyed out
maybe pulseaudio dies for some reason and you're back to plain alsa...
i don't know how or why.
update your system.
make a full reboot.
