SuSE 9.1 no sound with nForce

I have upgraded to SuSE 9.1 pro (Kernel 2.6.4) and everything runs �
perfectly, except the Audio.
It does not seem to work overall, I tried to install the Audio Driver from the nV Page according to the instructions with the same effect.

I dont hear any audio, no testsamples, no MP3s, nothing works audio-wise even though XMMS for example plays an mp3 file without complaining about a invalid soundcard.
Volumelevels and PCM are on 100.

Edit: I just looked into my /lib/Modules/2.6.4-54/Kernel/drivers folder and guess what: It doesnt even have a Sound folder in there with a driver.
How do I set it up?

Did you install the source rpm as your supposed to for suse?

And second, this is realy odd since nForce sound usualy works out of the box with suse, its just networking that needs a driver. Did you check to make sure suse wasnt trying to use the onboard kernel 2.6 drivers for nForce?

The problem is, there are no nForce RPMs for SuSE 9.1 that support the 2.6 Kernel its running.
All other nForce components work like a champ out of the Box, nVidia Gart does, Network Card does, everything works well except the audio.
SuSE is using the onboard drivers since there simply are none from nVidia who work for Kernel 2.6.
All works ecxept audio...

I assume this means. No, I didnt, and I didnt read the instructions for what to do when my kernel/distro doesnt have the driver available.

So go back to nvidia.com and this time download the source rpm and rpmbuild --rebuild it like the instructions say and you'll have a kernel 2.6 driver as it will make you one...

I noticed some strange behavior.

When I installed everything, sound did not work (no errors, but no sound). Drivers seemed to have loaded just fine, but nothing was coming out the speakers.

When I installed the default system, sound worked great.

On a default installation, I later used YaST to install the "All of KDE" package under "System Update". When I rebooted, the sound didn't work anymore.

I then Re-installed a default system, confirmed that the sound worked again and went into YaST to install the "Multimedia" package under "System Update". After this I restarted. When Suse came back up, the sound STILL worked.

Could this have something to do with a configuration script or a conflicting setting that happens when you install the "All of KDE" package?

I always click to install all of kde... I suppose it could be arts related though?

Ok, I've now installed Suse 9.1 with everything except for the "All of KDE" package. Sound still works. My next step is to go through each program that is installed in that package and find out which one makes my AC97 stop working.

Ok, I've nailed it down to the kdemultimedia3-mixer. Once I installed that program, sound stopped working. uninstalling it made no difference.

And your sure the root sound mixer wasnt just muting all channels on the card? Its odd that the mixer package would kill your sound. Perhaps upgrading to 3.2.2 would help?

Do you think I'd be able to just upgrade the kdemultimedia3-mixer package without changing anything else?

I suppose you could try going to kde.org and downloading just the latest kdemultimedia3 package and installing it with an rpm -Uvh --force --nodeps

had the same problem, uninstall package, kdemultimedia3-mixer

Just delete the sound card from Yast, then go to the konsole, su to root, type yast sound add, and it should test okay.

I'd just like to say u guys are awesome. I'm linux newb. My boss said I'd be an awesome linux/unix nerd cause of my love for programming and hacking or whatever so I installed suse 9.1.. blah, anyway,... I was having trouble with my audigy but I did one of the many things you guys suggested and it worked. i have sound =p Anyway,... I deleted my card from thru yast and then did the yast2 sound add and then tested it with yast2 playtest and it worked =p I'm so happy, I'd buy you a milkshake if i knew who you were.

There's a setting under Mixer in Control Center--Sound & Multimedia to "load volumes at login". Deselect that once you have the card working again.
