Slackware 12...internet not working, Lilo will no install
System crashed and so decided to try a new distro.
Was running xp pro, ubuntu 6 and mandriva 10...all accessed the net with no problem
Re-installed xp pro and decided to try slackware 10. Had many problems with slackware. XP pro is on the first hard drive and Slackware on the second...both in their first partition.
1) Could not install Lilo. It is asking me to boot from a floppy. I do not have one. The file exists and I could see nothing wrong. I am using a shareware version of the boot manager Bootit and Slack boots OK with it. I uninstalled Bootit and tried again but still cannot install Lilo. Tried the expert install, tried to install to the MBR..it will not install.
2) While in slackware I cannot access the internet. Ran netconfig. The file /etc/rc.d/rcinet1.conf exists but I am not sure how to interpret what I see.
Any help with both the above would be great. I did not post any messages because I am not sure what is relevant at this stage.
I have seen grub mentioned. I will try to get an install and see if it helps. Would however rather solve the current problem and also the internet problem.
Also in replying to a previous post, I only have one active partition per hard drive.

Thanks for the suggestions so far
Hi,
Your 'boot=/dev/hdb1' should be 'boot=/dev/hdb'. I would also include the 'lba32' in the global section of the '/etc/lilo.conf'. Edit the '/etc/lilo.conf' then as root;
Code:
~#lilo -v -t -b /dev/hdb #test the lilo.conf
~#lilo -v -b /dev/hdb #if no error then write to MBR
For lilo:
Boot your system with the slackware cd/dvd, follow the instructions to boot the install on your harddrive (at the point where you have to chose the kernel). When its ready booting, just login as root and type:
Code:
lilo
if you get any errors, post them here. If you don't get any errors just reboot.
Why do you install slackware 10, when the current version is 12.0? In 12.0 your network card whil already work (my card works out of the box).
If you want to use slackware 10, then you maybe need to download the driver for your network card and install them. (I have to this in the time I used slackware 10.2)
I would really recommend taking a little time to learn about GRUB and especially the 'chainloader' option. It's a great bootloader and down the road you'll almost definitely want to use it.
Read through this post (one of mine) that isn't exactly the problem you're dealing with but it does explain the usefulness of GRUB and it taught me a lot about the bootloaders. It can only help you understand it all a little better. http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...ros-xp-507791/
As for your internet problem, are you using wireless? Post the output of
Don't worry so much about the LBA. That won't stop you from getting the LILO menu. But you need to change /dev/hdb1 to /dev/hda. Then LILO is installed to the first MBR.
So, boot into Slackware, edit the /etc/lilo.conf file and, as root, run
With regard to your internet, can you determine which of the two (eth0 or eth1) you are plugged into? I assume this is NOT wireless?
You could try issuing these commands as root:
Code:
ifconfig eth0 up
dhcpcd eth0
The dhcpcd command should return a prompt fairly quickly. Then run 'ifconfig -a' after that and see if there is an IP address. Check for internet connectivity, etc. and let us know what your results are.
