Is there a time out on the OS choice and can it be configured? I'm planning to do this on a laptop without floppy-drive, but I've been having trouble to get any rescue cds to boot on it, so just to make absolutely sure before I start, how do I put Grub on a cd?
Got everything working like a breeze. Still having some problems with grub but I'll solve that in another thread. Would like to change the time-out though - 30 sec is very long
Sorry for the delay, I've too busy these days and I've not been able to find the steps I followed to create the boot CD with grub, sorry. Maybe this afternoon, if I have time, I can find them.
This is an example of my C:\boot.ini:
[boot loader]
timeout=10
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect
c:\bootsect.lin="Red Hat Linux 9.0"
If you want to change the time-out, you have to change the timeout variable (in red) in your boot.ini file. As you can see, my timeout is only 10 sec.
i suggest u just format your whole hd...make 3 partitions...linux primary...linux swap...and a dummy parition(primary)...install windows on the dummy partition ...then install linux...install a bootloader(grub or lilo) onto the mbr and bingo. also before u install linux makesure you get into a dos prompt and type" fdisk /mbr" to make sure you dont have a mbr and then install linux
To get back into your linux use the rescue option of your distro (which is??)
e.g. FC4 has a rescue cd/ option on the dvd, so you boot, type linux rescue and follow the instructions. That brings you to a command line in your distro, which enables you to follow the steps described earlier on in this thread.
BTW, if you really think you should claim support after waiting a whooping 2 minutes, maybe you should consider looking for paid support! The simple fact that people give of their time and knowledge freely to help you out without asking anything in return should make you a little more considerate in this respect.
