Cool Getting started on Red Hat 8.0

Hey There,

I FINALLY just started my new semester and so i didn't need my labtop everyday and decided to take the time to download Red Hat Linux 8.0 and wipe my hd clean so i could install Windows XP Professional (the only Windows OS that works on my labtop for some reason) and Red Hat Linux 8.0. Well now that it's installed im impressed, everything works like it's supposed to (except for tuxracer which i can't blame linux on for having a crappy graphics card in my labtop) and my LAN connection.

I am wondering about 2 things: (1) I currently have a LinkSys Wireless USB Network adapter "box" and i was wondering if there is some way in Red Hat Linux to configure it to connect to the wireless network on campus or some place to download drivers for it and (2) How do i create shorcuts/aliases or whatever to apps on the desktop? I've looked through many folders and i can't find where the apps are installed to.

Im sorry i have used linux before but it's always been in Virtual PC and haven't had my own copy/machine to run it on. Thanks for your help!

Colin

Apps that are installed with the operating system are generally stored in /usr/bin. Administration apps usable only by root in /usr/sbin. Programs that you compile yourself will generally default to /usr/local/bin unless you specify otherwise.

In KDE, all one has to do to make shortcuts is right click > Create New > Link to Application. Then fill in the name of the app, select it's icon and type in the name of the actual program to run in the execute tab. This won't apply if you're using Gnome however, 'fraid I don't know much about that, though it seems to me that it should at least be similar. Good luck with your linux experience

I have a Linksys WPC11 wireless card myself, but haven't had much (if any) luck in getting it working. That's a long story which nobody wants to hear... it's on the back burner for now. However, if you installed the configuration tools, you should have "redhat-config-network". You'll need root priviledges (it'll ask for the password), and you can start it from a terminal. I'm not sure what which icon is its equivalent through the menu.

If you installed Gnome (I believe it's the default), you create "launchers" instead of shortcuts. Right-click on the desktop, select "New Launcher", and fill out all the stuff you need.

If you don't know where a file is located, open up a terminal and type "which <program>", and it'll spit out the full path. Then slap that into the launcher dialog.
