I just updated my kernel from 2.6.9.5EL to ovzkernel-smp-2.6.9-023stab040.1.x86_64.rpm and now my X server wont start...i have posted the relevant files here:

Try running redhat-config-xfree86 - this presupposes, of course, that you're fairly familiar with the hatdware in your system (card and monitor). It looks to me as though your previous X configuration was somehow invalidated - changed, blown away or the x server itself was re-installed.

when i try redhat-config-xfree86

I have been trying to get pastebin.com to come up all morning. I want to go through your log in detail, but I can't get pastebin to show me anything. As soon as I can get a look at your file I will try to be of better help.

BTW - would you please post the COMPLETE kernel name you upgraded from? It may also be helpful to know what kind of machine you're running on and what video card (or motherboard) you're using.

Okay - I've gone through your file (it FINALLY opened up) and two things strike me - First - you appear to have an nVidia card and you're not using the nVidia driver.
Second - the system is attempting to use the vesa driver and it doesn't find an appropriate 'screen' setting in the Xorg.conf file.

I think you should run xf86config - redhat-config-XFree86 may not be appropriate for your machine. That MAY get you up and running.

If not, I think you should download and install the nVidia driver. It's been a long time since I've done that in Linux - I've forgotten what and how, etc., but the chances are everything I ever did, so long ago, to install and activate the nVidia driver probably doesn't work anymore anyway.

well i installed the nvidia driver but it still dosent work...i just think i need to "make" it load the nvidia driver instead of
the vesa driver ..tried the command xf86config - redhat-config-XFree86 ...says command not found...i just need to get it to load nvidia driver i guess...its a msi k8ngm2 fid motherboard with nvidia onboard graphics...works fine with my rhel4 default kernel...just dosent work (crashes) with my new kernel

Wel i just checked and the nvidia driver loads with my older kernel and is working great too..jus dosent load with the new kernel
