Why can I not write to an NFS client directory shared by Samba

I am Running ES4. Created Samba share setup and working fine. Created NFS mount to a Netware 6.0 box all working fine. When mounting the NFS share and connecting to Samba share users cannot write files. Editing the file with vi from the terminal window also works fine. Any ideas please.

AFAIK: you cannot share NFS via Samba ... one may, however, share a directory by NFS and Samba at the same time... is this the situation here?

I suppose you could mount an nfs share locally, and re-export that share by samba?

Or are you saying... a client mounts an nfs share, works fine. Then they mount the same directory as a samba share, and the nfs mount ends up read-only?

Or are you saying that if two clients access the same shared directory by two different means (nfs and samba say) then the access is read-only for one(?) or both(?) clients? (But this is not a problem if two clients access the same shared directory by the same share method.)

Or... argh: that's enough, you get the idea.

Simon Thanks for the reply.

Clarification.

I am trying to share an NFS share by a Samba share. In your reply you mention re exporting the NFS share via Samba. Can you explain what you mean. This may be what I need to do.

Explanation.

I have documents held on a Netware 6.0 box that I want to share across a wan link. The simple way is to give the users a login to the tree containing the server that holds the data at a cost of licenses. Since the division on the other side of the wan only support Windows this would involve installing clients etc which would not be practical or cost effective. I am trying to use the linux box to do this. I have exported the directory that I wish to share and mounted it on the linux box. The Novell server is the NFS server. It is possible to share Linux folders with Windows clients using the Samba/CIFFS protocol. All I need to do is marry the two shares together. If I can do this this would present a cost effective solution.

Regards

Tony

Think about what you are physically doing... you have a directory on your server which you want to share across a network.

Have you tried exporting the directory as NFS and SAMBA at the same time?

Re-exporting is where box A is an NFS server and box B is a SAMBA server and an NFS client. Box B mounts the NFS share served by Box A in the usual way, but the mountpoint is exported as a SAMBA share.

Since this is Linux, boxes A and B can be the same physical machine.

I suspect you are being hampered by the M$ tendency to think of a share as being a kind of hard drive... i.e. and object in it's own right. Instead, think of it as a result of a process.

Simon.

Can you expand your explanation as I am not a Linux Guru.

As I see it Box A is my Novell server and Box B is my linux server. On Box B I use the command "mount 10.254.54.1:/USER/FELFDG/Shared/MIS /home/Shared/MIS" to mount the NFS Share. How do I reexport this as a Samba share.

Look at it the other way around... you have a directory (say) /usr/shared/samba1

How would you normally go about sharing that directory in samba?
Right? Now do that.

Good.
Now to share a file on samba, all you have to do is transfer it to /usr/shared/samba1 ... you could even provide a link from /usr/shared/samba1 to the file you want to share.

A directory created inside /usr/shared/samba1 (say NFS1) will also be shared won't it?

What happens if you mount, say, a removable media device to /usr/shared/samba1/NFS1? Will the content of the media get shared?

What happens if you mount an NFS share to /usr/shared/samba1/NFS1 ?

I think users won't be able to modify files inside the share directory - at least not files that are already open - but they should be able to write files to the directory happily.
