kernel source problem

Hi! I use RH9.0 and my kernel version is 2.4

I wanna compile my kernel and update it to 2.6.7 but I can't find the old linux directory under /usr/src/

my problem is:
I download the kernel source, and do rpm -ivh linux-2.4.20.xxx
but doesn't work!! it's seemed that I can't install the kernel source

great thx for all help about this silly problem.

you need the kernel-source rpm normally.

while most "source" rpms are designed to be built and installed throught the RPM system, as the linxu kernel sourcve is frequently a feature in it's own right, it is often distributed by itself.

BUT... you don't need the old kernel to install 2.6.7, it is of no benefit to you...

thx first

i understand your words in this way:

I use the wrong disttributed version of kernel; but i download it from www.kernel.org, I think its a general one;

next all the source I get, they use old kernel, because of a newbie, I don't know how to do then if I needn't install old kernel, I just follow the step one by one

Would you give me some more tips or suggestion

thx anyway
