Hello, I would like to know if it is possible to install rpm package marked with a distribution different from the rh9 I have installed.
I found rpm packages coming from Polished Linux Distribution. And I wonder if I can use them.
A related question is : Can I upgrade a from a version package-version1.1.1-i386.rpm to a package-version1.1.2-i586.rpm, provide my architecture is greater than or equal to i586 ?
hi
every package u download u will find rpms for for different linux distros and different versions also
but u will find only 1 source package
this is of th reasom because rpm packages are precompiled with regard to a distributiion and its versin,so they are fast to install,
while the source we get is to be compiled,, so it always takes more time,
so if u do not get an rpm of ur distro u should get the source package,
rpm packags meant for other distributions may get installed on ur system, but it may conflicts,!!!
i386 package can be installed on all hardware that have an a architecture greater than the 386(this was one of the initial architecture of processors we had,now P3 is 586/686 (i am not confirmned))
so if u get a i386 packes ,it will installed on maximum machines ,because today generally we have architctures greater then i386, so if u get a packa o i686 ,it depends it will be installed on ur system.
i do not much more idea on this,u may confirm this also...
masand, thanks again for your answer. I knew a bit about that topic concerning architecture.
And forgive me about this, my question was not enough precise.
I wanted to know if, on a computer with for instance an i686 architecture, an upgrade of a package pac-v1-i386.rpm to the package pac-v2--i586.rpm would not create conflicts.
For instance let suppose that "pac-v1-i386.rpm" was installed with it dual developpement package "pac-devel-v1-i386.rpm". And let suppose that pac-devel-v1 is needed by pac-v1. Can that situation involve conflicts ?
