Compaq Presario 2266 and RH 9

Hi All,

I'm a newb, so bear with me - PLEASE!!!

Having problems with RH 9 starting after what seemed a successful install.

Grub loads and does it's thing checking and such then the screen freezes at the following:
apm: BIOS version 1.2 Flags 0x03 (Driver version 1.16).

I'm trying to put this on an old Compaq Presario 2266 with 128mb memory, onboard sound and video (SIS5598) and an 8gb HDD. (I know this is not the optimal setup, but want to learn Linux without ruining my main machine).

This machine does the same thing whether it be Red Hat 9.0 or Mandrake 9.1.

Thanks for any help you may offer.

At the first Grub screen, do an 'e' to edit the command. On the kernel line, add on to the end of the line: apm=off

Then try to boot.

This should disable apm for that boot. If it works, you can go into /boot/grub/grub.conf and add the apm=off to the end of the kernel line for all boots.

That would be shortly after you boot, there should be a screen that shows which Redhat you are going to be booting. At *that* point, type 'e' to edit. Using the pointers at the bottom of the screen, edit the line that has the kernel image. Add apm=off to the end of the line

Thanks for the help.

Ended up putting 98 back on the machine for my grandson and am in the process of putting together another machine with a graphics card that can handle something other than 640 x 480 (SIS5598 limitations).

Thanks again for your help.........
