Add GD Support to PHP5 on RHEL4 U4

I have a server running RedHat Enterprise Server (AS) Update 4, comes with PHP5, which is by default configured with '--without-gd'. Unfortunately for me, gd is something required by one of our web apps.

My system gives me a dependency error when i try `up2date php-gd` - says that php-gd requires php-4.3.9 - which is difficult for a guy running PHP5 (v5.1.2).

A package search on the RedHat Network shows that a beta php-gd package is available for RHEL4 AS on x86.

How have others dealt with adding gd support to PHP5 under RHEL4?
