why GTK box resizes in both horizontal and vertical direction?

I am starter in GTK programming and was going thru the tutorial downloaded from one of the numerous sites...

I was astonished when I entered the gtk_box_pack_start() function area...
I used this function taking help from the docs. and successfuly created a window and two buttons in a box...

I had set the "expand" argument to "FALSE" so that the buttons do not resize themselves during window resize...(the box was a hbox)...

now, I see that although the buttons are not resized in the h-direction but are still resized in the v-direction...and I could not find a function that will help me achieving this...

can anybody help me in this regard?

I want two buttons which could not be resized in either direction...

Regards,
Monojit.
