Vim is OOLLLLLLLD, it's a thing of the past!
When using Kate you have to run a X session, meaning without X you can't use computer to program, that's a big dependancy to me. Also, if misconfigured, Kate produce RTF format code in source files, very annoying.
It has non-standard keyboard shortcuts
What are standarts keyboard shortcuts ? Windows keyboards shortcuts ?
A lot of people use it for serious programming because it is based on vi, which comes as std on just about all Unix variations, whereas you can't guarantee the same about another editor.
Also, if you have a serious crash, vi is prob the only editor still working. It even runs off the boot floppy iirc.
if you havent met a serious programmer that uses vi you haven't looked very hard. vi was built for programming. there are to many features to talk about that help programmers. the fact that its OOLLLLLLLD lets you know the people working on it have had a lot of time to see specific needs for the people who need it

X comes with nearly every linux distro..., so it's not a dependancy as such.
I'm an Emacs and Kate fan!!
Emacs is excellent for software development, and I love it's mods which extent the functionality of the editor to an unimaginable level.
