Users network traffic calculation

Hi all,

I am wondering how the most control panels calculate the traffic usage of users. I try to find a solution bu couldn't able to do it. Is there any scripts or tutorial you can give me? Only need to find users traffic (upload/dowload of FTP, Apache, Mail) and show them for daily basis.

thanks
