problem in mounting a USB pen drive

Hi friends,
i am facing one problem...with pendrive...if i insert pen drive..it is displaying..sda,sda1 and sda2...but...if i exec this command
"mount -t vfat /dev/sda /mnt/pendrive"

it is giving...
unknown file system vfat....

after that...i enable those options in menuconfig....and compile my kernel...
then....onwards..it is giving.....wrong fs type....bad sector...some thing like that.....pendrive is working properly...in windows....

so..what will be the problem....any inputs from u.

What distro are you using?

Just try

mount /dev/sda /mnt/pendrive

And see if it works

Also try a
mount -t auto option

Also check /proc/filesystems to see if vfat is supported in your kernel.
