What kernel are you running? I ask this because when I tried 2.6.14 I had numerous problems with firewire and usb drives. 2.6.12-1 works great for me. Are you using gnome as a desktop. If so I would launch synaptic and make sure you have hal, hal-device-manager and udev installed.

Code:
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 1 1956 500720 5 Extended
/dev/sda5 1 1956 500704 b W95 FAT32
that's sorta wierd, why is there an extended partition on your Flash drive, with the Fat on a logical partition inside of it.. mine looks like this..

Code:
debian:~# fdisk -l /dev/sdb

Disk /dev/sdb: 256 MB, 256204800 bytes
15 heads, 48 sectors/track, 695 cylinders

the FAT partition was me messing around with CFDisk, because i have two new identicle pen drives, i've use one for seeing if a new partition would make any difference, but alas, no such luck. I know they work because they work on my friends XP laptop...

I agree the fat partition should be there, but why make it a logical partition inside of an extended pertition.

Why not just make it a primary partition like the ones I'm showing.. that was my question.

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 1 1956 500720 5 Extended
/dev/sda5 1 1956 500704 b W95 FAT32

as root, try
mount -t vfat /dev/sda5 /media/usbHardDisk

when removing,
umount /dev/sda5

yeah, what damienduff said.
the Buffer IO errors look like you or your software was trying to mount /dev/sda1 which is an extended partition, so not a real partition containing data, just other partitions.. You need to mount /dev/sda5, on that pen drive at least.

Not sure if it will help but I had a pen drive that used to work on windows fine but wouldn't load on linux. I reformated the drive with a fat partition and then it loaded fine.
