Migrating Software to Linux

Hello All,
I am here to tell you of my own personal experience, I hope this helps you ....

I had a (bloody) client wanting to migrate to Linux with his customized software made in VB with a Database back-end. Following are the things we tried for migrating the VB app to Linux :

Wine/VMWare/CrossOffice: A Simple 'no'. There is no developement future. In addition, one moduile used MS Access, so we had to purchase MS Acees increasing the total cost to .... phew ... In addition, the setup is to be replicated at 105 computers, this will be a major problem

vb2py: http://vb2py.sf.net Seemed prett Okay, It converted the forms well, looks-wise only ! The programming wasnt completly migrated and you can just forget abou the DB connectivity. In addition, it doesnt provide you with a consoledated view.

WxWidgets: A Simple No, may work as a quick-fix , but not a full-fledged solution

RealBasic: www.realsoftware.com Now this thingee worked ! It doest cost you, but its worth it ! Currently only available on Win Platform (will soon be available for Linux), this piece of software was able to convert almost 75% of the work. The rest, we manually programmed. DB Connectivity will not be 'replicated' as of the VB Project but is very easy. Just give away a build target and it'll build for Win, Linux and Mac .

Regards,
