Linux kernel Developer

Is it true that if you want to develope new *nix Operating System that extends from Unix Environment you should be 'Linux Kernel Developer'.

Is it true that, you can choose to join the Kernel Community Team or you can make those source be on your own way and use it on your own purpose.

Thanks for your answer.

Linux doesn't "extends from Unix Environment", it is a Unix clone rewritten from scratch.

I believe you first have to demonstrate your skills to actively become a member of such a community.
