Ooooh. What areas do you specialise in? E.g. Graphics, networked apps, and what languages?

Rather than trying to write something yourself, how about looking for a project already being developed? Linux development is a co-operation thing after all.

how about a dreamweaver/good WYSIWYG webpage editor alternative? using text editor to do HTML is fine but dreamweaver is much faster......

I never trust the GUI. WYSIWYG HTML/ASP/PHP (etc) editiors always find a way to screw things up. I find it's easier just to write the stuff yourself. I know what I'm doing, macromedia dosen't. BTW, have any of you actually used the lastest version of Dreamweaver? It's pretty friggin' buggy and slow. Tries to do too much, incorporate too many things, they didn't have time to perfect.

Anyways, Shak, why don't you build (from the mozilla source) an accessibility web browser? Perhaps one that dosen't rely so heavily on additional tags and [loss-of] formatting?

WYSIWYG editors are terrible in my opinion. They come up with bloated code that is twice the size of the same page coded by hand.

As far as an app to program, if I found a good file sharing prog along the lines of imesh, i'd never have to use windows again. I think that's about the only thing keeping me from wiping it off my hard drive.

there used to be a kazaa client, i think they took it down a while back, but you should still be able to find it.

now proceed to wiping.. (the hard drive)

Nooooo, please, no WYSIWYG editors, they are great for making pages with but have you ever opened up a dreamweaver HTML page in VI and had to fix it, a bloody nighmare to say the least, useless tags everywhere.

Cheer's

i agree with amp, editors are completely useless. in fact, they're more than useless... they're a step in the wrong direction, as they garble previously well written markup.

i'm not a C hacker (more into perl) but i usually like writting utilities for music and whatnot. i can't really suggest anything specific, but music management is something a lot of people are interested in.

i wrote an application which allows me to control my stereo system (XMMS plugged into my stereo receiver) from any browser. it's really cool... so i would suggest something along those lines, as you (assuming you're into music) would probably get a lot of use out of it. :-)

actually i find dreamweaver the best of the WYSIWYG editors. When you look at golive and frontpage, they take up about 3x the space for the same page. I never get any extra tags with dreamweaver, although it has some bugs, its still good for creating tables and such, when you are feeling too lazy to code them by hand

How about building a 3D-modeller? :}

Fast math and visualisation are out there,
just no decent frontends ;)

Cheers,
Tink

P.S.: HTML without WYSIWYG is like a fish without a bicycle! :D

Shak,
Two things: 1) You won't write something very well unless you really
want to see it implemented, so you really have to go with something YOU
think is missing or hasn't been done properly. 2) Keeping your
idea to yourself so it won't get "pinched" is kind of anti-opensource.
If it's a truly great idea, either it's already been done, or the opensource
community will be so enthusiastic about it that they'll lend all their
support to your building of it. cdrecord is a good example, it's almost
completely written by Jörg Schilling alone. There used to be another CD
writing utility available called cdwrite, but it was abandoned when the
author realized that Jörg was doing such a good job with cdrecord.
That's good and bad. On the one hand, there was no longer a duplication
of effort, but on the other there was no longer another perspective on
how to implement a cdwriting tool. . . An even better example is Linux
itself. If Linus had kept his idea to himself, and used Linux just for
himself, it would have failed, regardless of how good a programmer he
is.
My suggestion, use Linux until you find something that really annoys
you because it's either missing or poorly written, and do it right.

hehe, someone compared ANYTHING to Frontpage? man that's not even funny!

What i do still find funny though is the amount of people who always press enter when they reach the end of the text box when replying...
