The question does not have to be directly related to Linux and any language is fair game.

Java questions

Hello! I want to start learning Java so I can make web applets and program games for cell-phones. I have a few questions first however, and was hoping you could point me in the right direction:

Firt, some things that confuse me, please get me straight:
1) JSP is a Server Side Scripting Language, right?
2) J2EE refers to all... methods? of JSP and integration?
3) JavaScript is Client-side
4) Java is the language used to program and compile Applets that run on the Java Runtime engine, correct?

My other questions are, where is a good place to start? I found this: http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutor...ted/index.html
Is this a good resource? Also, I want to program the applets with gcc under linux. Is this possible? If so, can you point me to a good tutorial that walks me through the steps?

It is server side but not scripting. JSP pages are converted to java servlets then compiled to bytecode.

Yes, and much more. The architecture, the component packaging, the libraries ...

3) JavaScript is Client-side
Yes, but is unrelated to java, despite its name.

Yes, among others.

Certainly.

You'd rather use an IDE like NetBeans or Eclipse or directly the JDK's javac.
You may also want to have a look to JavaFX.
