Index Retrieval

i have a text file with records in this format
Quote:
this is first record Index<1>
this is second record Index<2>
this is first record Index<3>
this is first record Index<4>
this is first record Index<5>
.
.
.
this is 1000th record Index<1000>
a code keeps writing these records with index, when my code is stopped and restarted ,
i need to write a code that opens this file and reads the last records and gets the index of the ;ast record and updates a variable so that the system can continue indexing from where it left
