How to write window manager?

hello everyone

I fancy having a crack at writing a window manager (like Fluxbox etc.) and could do with some pointers to any info on how to go about it.

I have figured how to start a program from session manager so I have mastered the first bit now I need to know how the window manager interacts with the X server and the application etc in order to resize windows draw frames etc etc.

TIA

I know nothing whatsoever about this, but I'd wager it would help to study the source code for existing basic window managers. Lord knows there are plenty of open-source WMs to choose from!

I would imaging that you would want to use XLib. I've wanted to try my hand at this two I have simply been waiting to get some time on my hands first. I was thinking of maybe using the GTK libraries (not gnome) if it would work and if I could get them to do what I wanted...

However, essentially it is a simple matter (or so it seems) of creating an application that when started will suck up the entire screen real estate. After that you service requests to start applications, etc. To add to the link posted earlier I would also check out freedesktop.org as they have some specifications on behavior and interaction interfaces that most WMs seem to strive to support.
