New Window Manager

OK

Newbie running Red Hat 9.0.

A friend at work recomended Afterstep (available at afterstep.org) windows manager. (is this like Gnome?) I installed it and it seems fine but now when i try to launch it, I get a message that tells me that a windows manager is already running.

I think that I need to tell xwindows to use afterdark but I am not sure. Anyone have any ideas what file xwindows looks at for determining the windows manager?

Please submit your ideas!

If you're using a graphical login screen like GDM or KDM, newly installed window managers should auomatically become available in the list of window managers when you login. Sometimes they don't; I know that GDM keeps several files in /etc/X11/gdm/Sessions which are scripts to run the various window managers.

If you are starting X from the command-line with 'startx', it's easy though: edit a file called .xinitrc (note the dot) in your home directory. Add to the end of it:

exec afterstep

If there's already an 'exec' statement in your .xinitrc, just change it to this. Then 'startx' and everything ought to work!

I *highly* recommend that you use WindowMaker instead of Afterstep, there are numerous enhancements. Trust me.
