XV video driver can't init

I tried to change the video driver in Kaffeine to xv but it doesn't work. Xshm runs really choppy. I have DMA enabled and the xine engine is being used. When I tried to change the driver an error popped up saying "can't inti new video driver xv". The detailed information said:

"demux_avi: invalid avi chunk "demux_avi: invalid avi chunk "demux_avi: invalid avi chunk "demux_avi: invalid avi chunk "demux_avi: invalid avi chunk "demux_avi: invalid avi chunk "demux_avi: invalid avi chunk "demux_avi: invalid avi chunk "demux_avi: invalid avi chunk "demux_avi: invalid avi chunk "demux_avi: invalid avi chunk "demux_avi: invalid avi chunk "demux_avi: invalid avi chunk "demux_avi: invalid avi chunk "demux_avi: invalid avi chunk "demux_avi: invalid avi chunk "xine: found demuxer plugin: AVI/RIFF demux plugin
xine: found input plugin : file input plugin.

I really want dvds to play better. I would appreciate some suggestions. I remember xv being a good driver. I don't want to switch to another video player. I am running Mepis 3.4-3. I have an ATI video card (9700pro). Thanks. MCM

ATI driver (fglrx)

Have you checked your installation of the ATI driver (fglrx)?

This is often a problem.

Make sure you have the fglrx driver installed (ATI tab in Mepis OS Center) and you also need to get the fglrx kernel module to match your kernel in synaptic from the Mepis repositories

Relevant commands in konsole as normal user:
glxinfo
glxgears -info

You should have direct rendering and OpenGL from ATI rather than Mesa (though the Mesa OpenGL works, just not as well)

You may also need to edit your xorg.conf either manually or with fglrxconfig

I have fglrx running. Is there a setting in xorg.conf that I need to edit?

The Mepis OS Center does not usually load the fglrx kernel module
You need that
If you don't have it, get it in synaptic from Mepis etch repository

Then check your results in glxgears -info and glxinfo as suggested

They should show a high frame rate, direct rendering, and ATI OpenGL

Here are my framerates using glxgears. Does everything look okay? I am not sure if fglrx is the reason. Everything looks loaded in mepis OS Center.

Code:
22741 frames in 5.0 seconds = 4548.200 FPS
25044 frames in 5.0 seconds = 5008.800 FPS
25011 frames in 5.0 seconds = 5002.200 FPS
24436 frames in 5.0 seconds = 4887.200 FPS
24843 frames in 5.0 seconds = 4968.600 FPS
24850 frames in 5.0 seconds = 4970.000 FPS
24872 frames in 5.0 seconds = 4974.400 FPS
24853 frames in 5.0 seconds = 4970.600 FPS
24865 frames in 5.0 seconds = 4973.000 FPS
24840 frames in 5.0 seconds = 4968.000 FPS

Yes those frame rates are excellent. Looks like you are running A-OK.

Sooo any other suggestions about how to get XV working?

I really want to get DVDs running smoothly again. Is there anything I should configure or install?
