can't change display settings

for some reason, my maximum resolution is 1024x768 yet i know my setup is capable of up to 1280x1024. i've done it before in knoppix and windows. i was originally using the official nvidia drivers but i have since changed to the default drivers in the os control center. i've also tried to specify my monitor but that didn't help either. does anyone know what i might be able to do? thanks.

oh, and while we're at it... how do you resize everything in the taskbar? i deleted most of the shortcuts that were there previously simply because i didn't need them. now i can't move over the rest of the stuff to fill up the empty space.

Those links may help. They may not.
In the XF86Config-4 file, under "Monitor," is there something that says "HorizSync" and "VertRefresh"? If there isn't, there should be. I had this problem in Ubuntu and had to look up my horizontal and vertical ranges for my particular monitor (went to the manufacturer's website).

This file lives in /etc/X11 I think.

aysiu: I don't mind when somebody corrects me or suggest something else, but it's clear you didn't follow the links I posted:

"Scroll down to Section "Monitor" and change HorizSync and VertRefresh to the values found in the monitor manual."

So yeah, the links may or may not help... depending if you follow them or not...
