Angry Xserver Problem! NO GUI

what's up everyone--
____________________________

I'm running mandriva 2006 and I'm having a problem
getting the Xserver to run____RESULTING IN NO GUI!!!

1-

As root I use the XFdrake command and select vesa and select 1280x1024monitor and 640x480 resolution---- when I test it I just get a quick color flashes and then a black screen that makes me login agian!

2-

As root I use the "startx" command____RESULTING IN
xauth: creating new authority file /root/.serverauth.5282

Fatal server error:
Server is already active for display 0
If this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.X0-lock and start again.

Being that this computer was given to me (I DO NOT KNOW WHAT TYPE OF GRAPHICS CARD I HAVE!)

Everything including the GUI was working before....
until KDE started crashing!

So I chose to reinstall the OS and now I cant seem to get the Xserver GUI to run again!!!!!
THIS IS REDICULOUS!!

I dont know what else to try!

I've looked at every similar post there is and still nothing works.

can anyone help?

P.SThis is my first time using linux!

Use the command
Code:
$ lspci
as root to see what kind of graphics card you have. That will be a good start.

As root I use the command lspci and I get-

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82815 CGC [Chipset Graphics Controller] (rev 02)

SOLUTION: The 815 was in my list, I chose that instead of vesa.
