Xawtv + mandrake 9.2 = picture without sound

All,

When I run with Red Hat 9.0, xawtv runs fine and I get picture + sound.
When I run with Mandrake 9.2 (dual boot), I just have the picture.

Here is the result of xawtv -hwscan

This is xawtv-3.88, running on Linux/i686 (2.4.22-10mdk)
looking for available devices
port 61-61 [ -xvport 61 ]
type : Xvideo, video overlay
name : video4linux

port 62-62
type : Xvideo, image scaler
name : NV Video Overlay

/dev/v4l/video0: OK [ -device /dev/v4l/video0 ]
type : v4l
name : BT878(Leadtek WinFast 2000/ W)
flags: overlay capture tuner

Have you already had this problem? How did you solve it?
Thanks in advance for your help,

Vincent

I am having the same problem in Mandrake 9.2. Here is the result of "xawtv -hwscan" on my system:

This is xawtv-3.88, running on Linux/i686 (2.4.22-21mdk)
looking for available devices
port 61-61 [ -xvport 61 ]
type : Xvideo, video overlay
name : video4linux

/dev/v4l/video0: OK [ -device /dev/v4l/video0 ]
type : v4l
name : BT878(ATI TV-Wonder)
flags: overlay capture tuner

My sound board is a SoundBlaster Live. I am using the ALSA audio drivers, I think. (See the "Silent Night" thread here.) I see from "man xawtv" that there is an option ("-dspdev") to set the sound device.

Hmmm... When I start XAWTV from the command line I get:
Xlib: extension "XFree86-DRI" missing on display ":0.0".
but it still starts and I get a picture (but no sound). This msg seems unrelated to audio, but I know nothing. Anyone know what the msg means/how to fix it? I think getting XAWTV to start without errors would be a good first step. VincentB, do you get an error when you start XAWTV from a command line?

I see in my /dev directory that there is also an ADSP device. I tried specifying that on the command line. No luck.

Can anyone help us? TIA

DRI is hardware 3D acceleration and it is unrelated since you're using 2D to watch TV. Can't help you with your SB Live problem as I couldn't get the one I have to work even under Windows (without stuttering/latency probs) and am using my chipset's onboard sound instead. Most people have the opposite problem with xawtv though... sound but no vid... which is usually a tuner config prob.

Gnunoob, Crito, All,

I indeed have the same error message when I start xawtv.I would not worry too much about it as I get the same one when I start xawtv with Red Hat 9.0. With Redhat, everything works fine (sound + picture)

Initially, I thought my problem with Mandrake 9.2 came from the sound card (hardware problem). In fact I had to link the audio output of the TV tuner with the Audio input of my sound card. With XP and Red Hat 9.0, it works fine.
THe problem is that all other video application (XMMS - MPLayer - Xine - ...) work fine with Mandrake meaning that the soundcard is well configured (at least this is my conclusion). The problem then should come from a config file in xawtv but I can not find which one ...

Again any help is more than welcome ...

Thanks to all for your help,

Regards,

VincentB

In fact,

in order to be complete and accurate, here is the message I get when I start xawtv under REDHAT 9.0

But what about your sound board? What brand is it?
What sound drivers are you using? (OSS? ALSA?)
How many sliders do you have showing in Kmix? (I think we are both having audio driver/mixer configuration problems.)

I assume you have already done the usual mute, unmute, turn up all the volumes, try all the record buttons in Kmix, right? (Are you using Kmix?)

Hello,

And thanks for your answer.
Yes: I have already tried to mute / unmute and turn up all volumes using Kmix.

My sound card is :
[root@sun vincent]# lspcidrake -v | fgrep AUDIO
snd-cmipci : C-Media Electronics Inc|CM8738 [MULTIMEDIA_AUDIO] (vendor:13f6 device:0111 subv:1043 subd:80e2)

The pilote currently in use:
[root@sun vincent]# grep sound-slot /etc/modules.conf
alias sound-slot-0 snd-cmipci

[root@sun vincent]# /sbin/lsmod | grep snd-cmipci
snd-cmipci 23800 4

maybe the explanantion of the problem:
[root@sun vincent]# /sbin/chkconfig --list sound
sound 0:Arrêt 1:Arrêt 2:Marche 3:Marche 4:Marche 5 :Marche 6:Arrêt
[root@sun vincent]# /sbin/chkconfig --list alsa
alsa 0:Arrêt 1:Arrêt 2:Marche 3:Marche 4:Marche 5:Marche 6:Arrêt

Is this normal????

arrêt = stopped Marche=running (I have a French version on my PC)

Please ... any idea is welcome.

Thanks in advance,
Vincent

All,

I have re-tried some combinations in KMIX and YESSS ... by disabling Line-In Ba and Line-in Re ... it works.
If you have any explanations ... they are more than welcome.

Thanks to all for your help.

Regards,

Vincent

Good for you, VincentB.

Now could I ask to you to please answer my questions about what driver you are using. I am asking because I think this information will help ME solve the same problem.

What sound drivers are you using? (OSS? ALSA?)
How many sliders do you have showing in Kmix?

Also, if you would, in Kmix, change the Settings -> Configure Kmix -> Show Labels and then tell me the full names of the sliders that you disabled, that would help me too. Thank you.

VincentB is not replying, so does anyone else know what the equivalent SBLive sliders are to his "Line-In Ba and Line-in Re" sliders?

My setup works correctly in Windows. I am using ALSA drivers, version 1.0.0RC2.

Also, I have downloaded Knoppix Linux which runs entirely from a CD-ROM. When I boot that OS, which uses the olders OSS audio system, I get sound from XAWTV. What should I look for in the Knoppix configuration to apply to Mandrake 9.2 with ALSA?

Gnunoob,

Sorry forthe delay in my answer, but you should understand that I can not spend as much time on my home computer as I would like to. I have always tried to help people who requested my help the best I was able to! So please be patient from times to times : "Rome was not built in one day"

Having said that, here is the information I can get out of the 'Control Center of Mandrake' about my sound card.

Vendeur: ‎C-Media Electronics Inc
Autres pilotes: ‎cmpci
Bus: ‎PCI
Identification de Bus: ‎13f6:111:1043:80e2
Position sur le bus: ‎2:3:0
Description: ‎CM8738
Module: ‎snd-cmipci
Classe de matériel: ‎MULTIMEDIA_AUDIO

I have used Draksnd to switch the pilot from OSS to ALSA. Then, I used Kmix to disable the 'input' lines mentioned previously (Line-In Ba and Line-in Re) (I used the 'root' to do that). I have more 'labels' with ALSA active (about 15-20 if I rememebr well) than with OSS (just 8 of them).

As it was working fine at that time, I switch back to OSS and now everything is working fine.

Hope this helps,

And do not hesitate to ask for more information.
I can publish config file if you tell me exactly which one you are interested in.

Regards,
Vincent
