Question Why do I get this error when starting Mandrake 10?

Hi, I'm new to Linux, I just completed downloading Mandrake 10 disc 1. I haven't got 2 or 3. I tried installing Mandrake into Virtual PC for Windows and recieve this error when trying to load KDE:

execve failed for /etc/x11/x (errno 13)
giving up.
xinit: No such file or directory. (errno 2): unable to connect to X server
xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error.

I have tried typing startx before I type kde, but it doesn't make any difference. Any thoughts? I'm not quite sure what video card to use since I'm running in Virtual PC.

Thanks,
aavgeek

I am not sure that you are able to get a functoinal installation of Mandrake 10 only with CD 1... Not sure though...

I wouldn't bet on a functioning system based on a one disc setup either.

If you're short on money or the download is too large you might want to take a look at your favourite magazine shop and look for "Linux+ extra!Pack" that includes the basic three setup discs plus additional software. It got published in poland but made its way to germany/austria/switzerland/belgium which means if you come from europe there might be the chance to just pick it up on-the-go for 12 bucks.

Btw. I had troubles with VMWare (something like virtual pc), maybe there's a connection...
I didn't search for any solutions though.

actually, the first disk does include everything you need to start up, it just has none of the fun toys. I'm no expert, but It sounds like your x server isn't configured properly. It's most likely that you chose the wrong monitor or video card settings at install.

It might be missing some packages form the 2nd/3rd CDs... and this could be a bug they left out.
