I recently got wireless up and running on my Mandrake 10.1 HP Pavillion a300n system, and because I had been a while since being on the internet on Linux, I thought, "Hey, I forgot about Easy URPMI!". So, I ran it, updated everything, but there was a bit of a problem. I ran urpmi.removemedia -a because I couldn't add the new easy urpmi things, and then "urpmi database locked". So I restarted the system, and ran easy urpmi again without urpmi.removemedia -a because I had done that recently without updating after. Here's the output I got from it.
Code:

[root@localhost simon]# urpmi gdm
no package named gdm
[root@localhost simon]#
Note that gdm couldn't be found, while on my old sources, it found it. I also had a problem on my old sources because when downloading gdm, it would stall. I am downloading gdm because it is skinnable and a LOT better than the mandrake login.
The errors normally indicate that either your internet connection is not functioning or resolving thoses hosts, you are blocking (somehow) ftp access, or that those servers are not responding at the moment.
I've NEVER seen ALL servers fail to respond at the same time, so you probably have a local problem.
You can always add an alternative source to act as a backup to your primary URPMI source too by merely prefixing the entry.
Actually, I have a bigger problem I just discovered.
Because of my new wireless connection, I decided that since it was ready, I would put it in startup. So, I opened mandrake control center, opened up connections, and modified the one option under wlan0 to "start at boot". Although this may seem like a wireless problem, this is where it gets mandrake.
It restarted the internet, of course, and when in the console in Mandrake showed what was going on (note that something went wrong aa while ago i think with a skin i installed in gnome that wouldn't let me into things that needed root, so when i use control center, I open a console, log in as root, and type mcc/drakconf), it got to "bringing up interface eth0", it stalled. I hadn't though to take eth0 out of startup, there's my problem, I think. Anyway, that stalled, so I closed the console. I then tried to close the control center, but, it was frozen. I did get it closed, but I think my kernel crashed, and ever since, I've been afraid to go back into Linux, because my computer scares me with things no other computer ever does, I have a very wierd, i guess, computer.
So anyway, here I am, staring at luna in XP, worrying my head off, while I could be sitting in front of a beautifully put together, sorry, Mac Os X style of Gnome. Any ideas to help me?
::edit 1::
Also, in an open console, I typed mcc again, and it brought up a non-graphical version of control center, and also when I tried to open up any new programs, it didn't do anything. Now that I think of it, it is probably a kernel crash, but the thing that made it crash will now start up next time I go into Linux.

All you need to type is drakconf as a normal user to get Mandrake Control Center, you will get the opportunity to input your root password. Have you confirmed GDM isn't already installed? Type: rpm -q gdm if it's installed you'll get the package & version.

Actually, I installed a bad skin one time in gnome, and now anything root in X needs to be opened in the terminal, it doesn't really matter. And gdm isn't installed, it isn't one of my login options in the control center, and I have necer installed it.
Ok, never mind, I actually figured everything out. I think the urpmi problem was because of the urpmi lock, and when I started up linux, it stalled a bit on eth0, then it skipped it after 1-2 mins, and wlan0 loaded up fine, GDM and gdm themes are installed, and I now have eth0 out of startup and my pc starts fine.
