h3rb1, thanks for the reply. I didn't get an email, I believe my ISP's
spam blocker caught it. Could you send the info again and I'll look
for it this time? Thanks again.
I've tried compiling 2.0 from source and get an error on ./configure (it can't find gtk+-2.0.pc and I can't find that on the web or the Mdk disks. So it doesn't know where GTK+ is.
Another suggestion was to download the 1.3pre version, which I did, and then - when it was working - compile 2.0. 1.3 seemed to install OK, and the intro screen (installing directories on my home directory) ran, but then when I try to fire it up, the terminal message is "Illegal instruction". I get the same if I try to access as root. BUT I do have it on my menu under Multimedia as "The GIMP (Development version)". Doesn't work from that either.
winger regarding your problems with slackware, even though you chose KDE that just means its your default desktop, doesn't mean it will boot directly into kde... what you need to do first is configure your Xserver, do this by at the command line as root enter:
xf86cfg
then go through the necessary steps of configuring ur gfx card, keyboard, mouse etc... then save the file and make sure it goes to /etc/X11
then you need to configure you sound by doing:
alsaconfig or maybe alsaconf
cant remember but it's one of those, thjen once your Xserver and sound is configured you can logout as root and run:
startx
then kde should be up and running, if you need more info on this you can read the Docs on slackware's website, and believe it or not they are soooooo easy to understand, contrary to what people believe - Patrick Volkering produced the easiest linux imo, you will have more control over your system and like Chinaman says you will learn Linux is you use Slack, if you use Mandrake you will learn Mandrake :-)
1. Forget the rpm - use the tarball (from www.gimp.org)
2. After untarring - ./config (if it errs all the needed libraries are on the CDs and eventually it will complete config OK); make (takes about 20 mins) and make install.
3. command is gimp-2.0
4. first try I got this error message: "error while loading shared libraries: libgimpwidgets-2.0.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory"
5. Remedy - as root type ldconfig
6. Then exit and into home/~ directory
7. gimp-2.0 and away it goes.
