Just installed Mandriva one 2007 metisse and im very impressed with it so far.
One of the first things i did was add in the native resolution for my laptop into my xorg.con file of 1280x800 but tbh im not sure if it worked or not?
If I go system->preferences->screen resolution i get the message:
“the x server does not support the XrandR extension. Runtime resolution changes to the display size are not available”
and the app just QUITS!
Hence i cannot tell exactly what screen resolution i am running at.
What i want to know is why this message is appearing, how i avoid it, how i can see my current screen resolution and also, whether i'd be better off installing the drivers on the aTI website or whether they'd cock everything up completely?
I use the ATI linux driver on my desktop and while I have an appropriate range of resolutions to pick from I do not yet have 3D acceleration. Through a variety of ritual sacrifices and incantations it could be done so I hear, but personally am tempted to switch back to Nvidia which I haven't used in several years. Word is their linux drivers are much more complete. I realize that's scant hope for a laptop user; so I would suggest your using the ATI driver.
To restart X, Log out from your current session (no need to reboot the computer) then press <CTRL>+<ALT>+<Backspace>. X should restart with your new resolution.
You would be better off installing the drivers for your ATI card. It would probably solve the 'no support' error message.
For a check of your screen res, I would find an image on the web (use google image search or something) that has a known size, and then view this in your web browser (make sure your web browser does not automaticlly resize the image). You can then gauge the resolution of your desktop. For example a 1024x768 image would be exactly the same size as your screen if your desktop is set at 1024x768 res.
Well that wasn't what I'd hoped!
Installed the ATI drivers, ran aticonfig --initial, rebooted and now the system runs like A DOG! rofl!
If I click the mouse button it takes about 3-4 seconds just to draw the response. If I drag a window it grinds to a halt! LOL.
erm, yeh. sorry EDJ. It'll be no consolation, but I have also just tried to install metisse and it failed during the log in to the desktop (i had an error message saying my log in lasted less than 10 seconds!). I have had to reinstall the standard 2007 distro, but it's no real loss as I would never really use the 3D windows that are in metisse. I would recommend trying the full DVD and also trying installing the drivers again...
Also, I don't know much about ati drivers, but they can be installed from the control centre package manager if you have the right sources loaded, rather than through downloads from the ati website.
