Scanner Icons always reappear on desktop!

Every time I login, 2 icons show up on my desktop:
XSane /proc/bus/usb/001/004
Kooka Microtek International, Inc. ScanMaker 4800

If I delete them, they reappear as soon as I logout and log back in.

Configure Desktop / Behavior / Device Icons are turned off.

This is driving me nuts! Can anybody tell me how to keep these icons from appearing!

The scanner that they link to doesn't even work in Linux!

PS I'm using Mandriva 2005.

I have seen a similar situation when I had a USB device attached to the machine, but that wasn't configured, showing up on the desktop. I'm surprised though that by turning off device icons that didn't work? Have you tried turning off all icons to see if that has any effect. It could be that your KDE profile is not working properly, although I have experienced making changes in Linux using a GUI and nothing happening.

What happens when you unplug the scanner? Do the icons disappear?
