I´m so happy because I´ve finally got Linux Mandrake on my system.
Everything got configured by itself (including the ethernet card which I´m using to surf now) ... However, my Creative sound card (SB Live Value) isn´t configured though it has been detected by Mandrake.
I also have a SB Live! value and it was detected and configured by Mandrake 9.2 during installation. However, as stupid as it may be, the Master and PCM volumes were set to zero... I know it may sound silly but please check the settings for your volume controle application. Other than that, I am not sure what else it could be!
I installed 9.2 just yesterday and had the same problem as you. I had sound when playing dvd's or mp3's but the volume was nearly zero. I solved this by installing 'aumix' (use 'install packages' and just type it in). After installing just run it (under 'multimedia', 'aumix') and adjust all the volumes you want.
You can run the KMIX application... For that, you just have to open a terminal session and type "kmix &" (don't use the double quote).
As for MP3s and DVDs, well MP3s will play right away with the TOTEM application (already installed with Mandrake 9.2) but, for DVDs, you need to install a rpm package called "libdvdcss" first (just do a search in www.google.com).
Be aware, the KMIX application and the KMIX applet are not exactly the same. It is much user friendly to use the first one, although both will do the job.
As mentioned earlier (see above), the TOTEM application (already provided and installed with Mandrake 9.2) plays MP3 right away... You can also use XMMS which is also a good alternative, although I must say that its very small window interface is quite annoying...
