At the login screen, optioins are
- select a user from the list
- "REBOOT"
- "HALT"
- Selecting user works as expected;
- "HALT" works as expected;
- but if I click on "REBOOT", I get a blank dialogue box with buttons for "BACK" and "OK". If I ckick "BACK", it returns me to the previous screen; if I click "OK", nothing happens... period
How do I reboot gracefully? Or is this a bug with no workaround? Or what????
That's a problem I've yet to have. The window that pops up that you say is blank is supposed to give you a list of the boot option that LILO has on your machine. So I'd guess the problem has something to do with the system trying to read the LILO config file. You should also be able to do a soft reboot by opening up a terminal and executing the command "reboot." May have to be root depending on how your machine is configured, if so... su is your friend.
I know there is a way to run an autocheck to make sure that your system matches what's in the rpm files, but I forget the flag to do it. It's part of rpm, go look for it.
Beyond that, make sure mandrake is up to date, yadayadayada..
I to also have this problem, but not alway's. I talked to othe people who have had the problem also. I still have not found a solution. Do you know what bootloader your using. Lilo or Grub? The one provided with the distro or another distro?
It works OK if you don't alter the lilo config.
It you alter it then the thing won't reboot, you get a blank GUI and you can only do a halt.
It's a bug.
ok, guys this is a problem with mandrake Display Manger (mdkKDM) you can fix it by changing your display manager to KDM or GDM. You can do this by going to Mandrake control center and click on "Hardware" then select "Display Manager Chooser" then select any of the display mangers, I prefer KDM, but have also used GDM. both work for me.
Ok, after doing a little bit of research, it looks like this feature (choosing kernel at reboot screen) is something that the foloks tried to put on top of the normal linux package. This would explain the reason why I got blank looks from my friends that use slackware. Now, I've also been told that this feature is not in mandrake 9.2. If true, this means that they tried to do something neat but couldn't get it work, so trashed it. After thinking about it from a programing point of view I think this was probably the best solution.

Sure It does. When you selected kdm did it install the package. It didn't for me. I had manually install it. kdebase-kdm.blah.blah.i586.rpm. The select KDM in mandrake control center. Reboot.

KDM is listed there. I chose it. I had previously installed everything that appeared with kde. I do not believe I saw kdm listed as one of the rpms I could add straight out of the distro.
Wait it gets better, sometimes clicking logout will bring up a little box witha dragon in it that asks you what youwant to to, log in as other user, shut down or reboot. Yes, this seems to be a problem with mandrake linux 9.1
Yup, i have this problem also. What i have resorted to doing is just log out "username" and then log in again. Then log out again and that little dragon pops up and asks: Log in as new user, shutdown or reboot.
There has to be a way to get that to heppen first time round.
wow, I guess I've just been lucky... every install on every machine I've done has given that pop up window on logout. Of course, I don't get the pretty dragon in Gnome, but...
